Which apps remove the location

  • iPhone (Messages, Mail, AirDrop): Location is included by default. Before sending, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and switch Location off.
  • Google Photos: Location is shared per album or link. Photos you download or share outside the app keep the camera's GPS.
  • Telegram: Sending as a Photo removes it. Sending as a File keeps the original, location included.
  • Discord: Removes these details from images.
  • Instagram, Facebook (and Marketplace), WhatsApp chat photos: Viewers cannot see these details, according to Consumer Reports. Sending as a document, or in original quality, may keep them.
  • Email attachments: Keep whatever the photo carries.

Apps change how they handle photos. When it matters, check the photo itself here before you post it, or send a clean copy.

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

Can a photo show where it was taken?

Yes. Photos from phones often carry the GPS position, the camera or phone model and the time they were taken. This check shows what a photo carries and lets you save a clean copy.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It is read on your device, and the page has nothing that could send it.

Which apps remove the location when I share a photo?

Discord removes it. Telegram removes it when you send a Photo, not a File. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp chat photos hide it from viewers, according to Consumer Reports. iPhone shares include it unless you switch Location off under Options, and email attachments keep it.
